So to help you find the right cot for your pooch, I’ve taken the time to scout for the best options in the market. I found these 5 gems to recommend for your pet:
MY TOP PICK: Big Barker 7-Inch Orthopedic Dog Bed (Headrest Edition)
Product Name: Big Barker 7-Inch Orthopedic Dog Bed (Headrest Edition)
Product Description: For Golden Retrievers, I highly recommend the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed. It’s 7 inches thick, 48 inches long, and 30 inches wide. This is perfect for adult Goldies with or without orthopedic problems. This dog bed is made from American-made therapeutic foam that won’t flatten even if you have a heavy dog. Also, it has a machine-washable microfiber cover that provides warmth and comfort at the same time.
What I love the most about this bed is its 10-year warranty. If the foam didn’t retain 90% of its shape in 10 years, you’re entitled to a 100% money-back guarantee. No other dog bed can give that warranty!
It also has a headrest where your dog can prop its head while sleeping. Aside from being easy to clean, this bed also meets CertiPUR-US standards.
It cost a little more than most dog beds, but you’ll definitely have a piece that will last for years.
✔️10-year money-back warranty
✔️American-made foam that won’t flatten easily
✔️Meets CertiPUR-US standards
❌The top fabric could be a little softer (not a biggie)
Furhaven Ultra Plush Orthopedic Dog Bed
If you prefer a bolster-type for your pooch, you should consider the Furhaven Ultra Plush Orthopedic Dog Bed. It’s 8 inches thick (4-inch sleeping surface), 44 inches tall, and 35 inches wide. This is available in Jumbo and Jumbo Plus sizes to suit your Goldie.
This dog bed is made from faux fur cover with suede bolsters. These materials are very soft and gentle on your doggo’s nose. It also looks great which will compliment your home décor.
It uses an egg-crate support foam which distributes the weight of your dog. This is ideal for adult dogs with aching joints.
This Furhaven bed is a little thinner than the Big Barker which suits senior dogs that find it hard to climb on elevated beds. And since it has walled sides, your dog can burrow into it at night for an added sense of security.
✔️Made from support foam
✔️Walled sides for burrowing
✔️Super soft cover
❌The bed cover is a bit thin but it works
Milliard Premium Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed
If you’re looking for a simple bed for your Golden Retriever, consider getting the Milliard Premium Orthopedic Dog Bed. It’s a 4-inch thick cot made from CertiPUR-US certified memory foam and support foam base.
This has a machine-washable cover and rubber grips at the bottom to keep the bed from slipping even if your Goldie is having a rough dream. Its cover is waterproof (plastic lining inside) which keeps accidents away from the foam.
Take note that this dog bed doesn’t have bolsters or headrests. If your dog loves snuggling, placing this in a corner with a pillow should do the trick.
What I really dig about this dog bed is it doesn’t get hot to sleep at during summer. My Goldie remains comfy even on his afternoon naps. To cut the story short, my dog no longer wants to sleep on my bed.
✔️Comes with an inner plastic lining
✔️Rubber grips at the bottom to keep the bed in place
✔️Doesn’t get hot to sleep at
❌Not for aggressive chewers!
BarksBar Orthopedic Dog Bed
If your dog prefers a plush cot with padded rims, the BarksBar dog bed is the one to purchase. It’s 40 inches long and 30 inches wide with a 10-inch thickness from the rim. This can accommodate large and heavy Goldies beyond 80 pounds.
This has a polyester cover with an orthopedic foam base. Meanwhile, the padded rim is stuffed with cotton for added comfort. It contours well on my dog’s body and works as a soft bolster.
I really like its quilted design which makes it look chic. Aside from that, it comes with a rubber backing to keep the bed from sliding.
It’s like a nest for your Golden Retriever. If your dog tends to have accidents, I suggest that you wrap the foam with a plastic bag to shield it from the moisture.
✔️Cottony soft padded rim
✔️Orthopedic foam base
✔️Can accommodate heavy dogs
❌Removing the rim padding is a challenge
Friends Forever Orthopedic Dog Bed Lounge
My last recommendation is the Friends Forever Orthopedic Dog Bed Lounge. It comes with a poly-fill bolster that lets your dog prop its head for added comfort. This is paired with human-grade mattress foam to provide support to dogs with orthopedic problems.
Friends Forever has a water-resistant liner which makes it easy to clean. Overall, this is 5 inches thick, 50 inches long and 40 inches wide. This is perfect for large Goldies that love lounging in. In fact, this can carry up to 130 pounds of weight. If you find it a bit large for your pooch, you can get XL or L size.
All of the sizes come with a removable and machine-washable cover equipped with heavy-duty YKK zippers. Also, it comes with a non-skid bottom and fur-resistant cover.
I love that this comes with a 1-year warranty so your purchase is protected. As a bonus, it comes in four different colors.
✔️Made of human-grade mattress
✔️Equipped with heavy-duty YKK zippers
✔️Hair and tear-resistant bed cover
❌The bolsters tend to bulge in some spots (my dog loves it just the same)
Benefits of dog bed for your Golden Retriever
Buying a dog bed isn’t just a luxury. It actually brings in a few benefits to your pooch, especially senior Golden Retrievers. Here are some of the guaranteed advantages of investing in a comfortable dog bed:
-Supports joint health
Golden Retrievers will grow as big dogs. And since they are carrying extra weight, their knees will bear the brunt of their daily activities. At night, it will help to ease the pressure on their joints if they have a soft bed to retreat to.
Compared to sleeping on a hard floor, a dog bed actually reduces stress, risk of inflammation, and sleeplessness. Your dog will also be in a better mood by morning.
-Establishes a safe spot for your dog
When your dog has a safe spot of its own, it will no longer reign on your sofa or disrupt your sleep by climbing into your bed. By placing the bed in a secluded spot, your dog will prefer to go to it than to lie around the floor.
This safe spot also reduces separation anxiety and vocalization at night.
-Concentrates shedding in one place
Golden Retrievers are heavy shedders. If your dog has a bed where they will lounge and rest at night, most of the hair will be concentrated in one area alone. It’s easier to clean and it will save your furniture from balls of fur.
Golden Retriever dog bed buying guide
Before you scout for your dog’s bed, here are some of the points to keep in mind:
Types of dog beds to choose from
Just like human mattresses, dog beds come in different shapes, sizes, and types. Here are some of the most common finds in the market:
-Orthopedic dog bed
Personally, I prefer an orthopedic dog bed for Golden Retrievers regardless of age. This type of bed has thicker foam which supports the weight of the doggo. Also, the padding contours well on the shape of the dog’s body which helps ease pressure points.
Orthopedic dog beds are ideal for senior dogs too as it supports the recovery of hip dysplasia, arthritis, and other life-long conditions. If you have a service dog, an orthopedic bed is advisable to give them enough rest at night.
-Bolster dog bed
Bolster or donut dog beds have walled sides which lets your Golden Retriever prop its head on it. Also, these walls let your pooch snuggle on the bed. It provides a sense of security and warmth on your dog, especially for Goldie puppies.
Bolster dog beds can also come with orthopedic foam if you want your dog to enjoy the best of both bed types.
-Elevated dog bed
Elevated dog beds are outdoor types made with a steel frame and a fabric sheet. Since it doesn’t have thick foam, it’s cooler to sleep at. Also, it’s best for Golden Retrievers who are sleeping outside the house. If you’re lounging by the beach with your dog, this bed will be a perfect buy.
However, this doesn’t offer much support for Golden Retrievers with orthopedic problems.
-Pillow style dog bed
Pillow style beds are plush and filled with polyester, cotton, or foam. It’s a common choice for family dogs but it doesn’t offer orthopedic support.
Still, pillow style beds are more durable and can be moved anywhere in the house easily.
-Mats and pads
Mats and pads are flat dog beds that are a bit thicker than rugs. It’s best for Golden Retrievers that are having trouble climbing into thicker beds. Since it doesn’t have better padding, it’s not usually suitable for dogs recovering from injury.
Check the material
After picking the right design, you should now check the material on which the bed is made. For the cover, I recommend polyester, cotton, or a combination of both. The likes of faux suede and corduroy are fine as long as it suits the weather.
If possible, avoid pure wool since it’s a pain to clean. The hair of Golden Retriever gets stuck on it and it takes more than machine-washing to remove.
For the padding, memory foam or support foam are ideal. Just take note that memory foam can be a bit hot to sleep on, especially if your dog’s sleeping area isn’t well-ventilated.
Thickness and comfort level
A very thin bed is a no-no if you have a Golden Retriever. This is a big doggo that needs support when sleeping on its bed. I recommend at least 4 inches of padding for Golden Retrievers around the 75-pound weight range.
Aside from providing optimal support, thicker padding also gives added warmth to your pooch, especially during winter.
No one wants a bed that takes forever to clean. I personally prefer one that has a machine-washable cover. Some beds can be tossed entirely to the washing machine for cleaning.
It all boils down to the material just like I’ve mentioned earlier. Also, Golden Retrievers can have accidents at night and it will save you from the hassle if the dog bed you chose is a breeze to clean.
Get the right size
Sizing is important. Even if you have the right material for the bed, it will not be comfortable enough unless your dog fits perfectly in it. The rule of thumb is to measure your dog’s height and length and then compare it to the dimensions of the bed you’re planning to purchase.
A few inches of allowance are also advisable so there’s a little room to twist and turn.
NOTE: If you have a growing puppy, I advise that you get an adult-sized bed already. Golden Retrievers grow at a crazy pace. It will only take a few months for them to outgrow a small bed.
Giving your pet the best dog beds for Golden Retrievers will ensure well-rested nights. Also, you’re giving their joints a big favor by helping ease the pressure points. Even if some dog beds cost a few more bucks, it’s definitely worth it when it comes to quality.
